Cloning from M.2 SATA to NVME - Boot Error
Entry level laptops and desktops from a few years ago are needing their disk storage upgrading. Many of these use M.2 SATA drives rather that NVME, as SATA was cheaper.
So simple solution, clone SATA disk to an NVME, more space, better speed!
Then when you try and restart the PC you get: Inaccessible Boot Device
Which throws a spanner in the works.
How do we fix it?
What is the problem?
During the Windows boot cycle it loads drivers for the various devices, including one for SATA drives.
But, NVME needs it’s own specific driver, which is not currently loaded by Windows.
Hence the BOOT error.
Solution
Thankfully the solution is super simple!
Just boot into Windows Safe Mode, which loads many core drivers by default.
The PC should now boot from the new NVME, but more than that, the required NVME boot driver will have been installed.
Restart the PC into normal mode, and it should just start normally.
Safe Mode can be accessed by:
Restart your computer while holding down the Shift key, then navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, and select option 4 or F4 to start in Safe Mode.
